With this film, Shakun Batra who was also seen in Imran Khan starer Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na as an actor makes his debut in Bollywood as a director. From the trailers, songs etc, the film was anticipated to be colorful (like all Dharma movies are) young, peppy, fresh, loads of fun and humor, but sadly it doesn’t deliver.
The story of Ek Main aur Ekk Tu is narrated by Imran Khan’s character Rahul Kapoor, about incidences which take place in the span of 2 weeks which change things for him.
Rahul is the son of an elite Mumbai couple – Mr and Mrs Kapoor (played by Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah) who always have controlled their son’s fate. Mr. Kapoor always desired a “gold” from his son while Mrs. Kapoor on the other hand always took care of her son’s appearance. After completing his studies, his father sends him to Las Vegas to work in a firm as an architect.
Things turn around when he is fired and by chance at the time when his parents have come to Vegas for a business meeting, he hides this as he is afraid of their reaction. After his parents leave, Rahul decides to meet with a psychologist to deal with the problem, not much there but there he meets; probably the most “outrageous” girl he has ever seen. Riana Braganza (Kareena Kapoor) who is there for her own set of problems- her unemployment, cheating ex-boyfriend; who she suspects has asked his friend to spy over her, and misunderstands Rahul to be that friend. In the midst of all misunderstandings she yells at him and creates a big scene but soon realizes the big blunder she committed tries to make it up to him and asks him to join her for a drink as it is Christmas and they both don’t have any one to go back home to.
They get super drunk on the streets of Vegas and land up outside a Wedding Chapel and under the influence of alcohol make a big mistake of getting married. They decide to get it annulled, but seems like luck doesn’t want them to part ways so easily as in the spur of events they spend few more days together one of them being Riana’s birthday. And then the story is about do they fall in love or not, annul their marriage or not as they share some beautiful moments with each other, teach other things and if getting married on a drunken night in Vegas was the biggest mistake or the best one they had made!
Shakun Batra’s direction is weak in parts and the Script could have been tighter with more to offer, better dialogues and punch lines.
Kareena Kapoor’s Riana Braganza is good, but fails to impress. After playing “Geet” in ‘Jab We Met’ she plays Riana with similar peppy- bubbly, free flowing, full of life traits, where she looked charming, spectacular and effortless in JWM she looks equally forced in this one. Her styling is pretty with lots of colorful clothes just like her personality, sadly this is the only thing that impresses you about her character.
Imran Khan looks very cute with his boyish charm and serious look as Rahul but he too has nothing new to offer. He plays a normal or rather a casual character. He is similar to how he is in the other films. His styling is very subtle and sophisticated, yet lacks the colors.
Initially, one feels that the pace of the film Ek Main aur Ekk Tu is slow in the first half, and seems to endlessly drag at many points, but the second half is comparatively better but still cannot make up for the first half. Even the songs which could have been the best part about the film disappoint you; so much could have been done with the title track so much to show for a drunken night in Vegas but there is nothing new in it.
It has a loose direction and seems pretty immature in some segments. Script could have been tighter; with lots more to present like better dialogues and punch lines.
